Ode to 2010

Another ode. Don’t lie, you love them…

2010 was not a very eventful year, but still an important one. With a busy and huge 2011 coming up, I will look back on the events of 2010…

January

I found out that I was able to graduate in December. It was an exciting and scary discovery/decision but ultimately one of the most beneficial I have ever made. I only considered the most important person in this decision – me. I still to this day believe it was one of the best decisions I have ever made because it benefited me on all levels. Phillip and I also reserved the Ballpark for our wedding reception! We saw it, loved it, and booked it to solidify our vision. And from there, the wedding planning took off! I also started a loaded semester filled with 17 hours worth of courses. Phillip’s grandmother also passed away.

February and March

These months were pretty uneventful. There was planning for the engagement parties. Valentine’s day and Spring Break were thrown in there too. It snowed big time in Texas!

April

Our first engagement party! Heather, Cameron, and my family put together a gorgeous party that was perfect for introducing our extended families to each other. From this point forward, it really felt like we were getting married!

May

We found out that Manda was pregnant! Now that baby girl will be born very soon and I can’t wait! We also had our second engagement party that was so fun and I’m so glad we were able to have another one for all of our wonderful friends to share with us. My crazy-packed summer semester started with a bang. I took 13 hours and it was tough! I also started my life-changing job at Student Health Services. This student worker position was everything but simple and juvenile. They gave me so much freedom and allowed me to fall in love with the health education field.

June

Phillip moved out of his apartment and back home. Summer was crazy with tons of school work and regular work. I hardly had time to take a break.

July

Gary proposed to Samantha! We went wedding dress shopping! At the end of the month, I found the perfect dress and ordered it. You will see it in about 5 and a half months! Engagement pictures were taken as well.

August

Nothing much happened during this month either – adding to the relatively uneventful year of 2010.

September

We found out our wedding date! June 11th – our first choice! From then, we instantly booked the beautiful chapel in Irving and confirmed my uncle as our officiant. From then on, things have rapidly fallen into place. Phillip and I also shared our 6th anniversary. That’s right. We have been a couple for that long! It doesn’t seem like it’s been that long, but it has! This also marked the one year anniversary of our engagement. I got my aggie ring as well. This was a huge milestone for me. It made me feel like an aggie and made me fully realize that I was going to graduate in just under 3 months. I had a kind of crummy birthday, but the previous year was so fantastic and next year will hopefully make up for it. We also booked our honeymoon cruise!

October

Big sister got married. She was beautiful and we welcomed her new family into ours. I enjoyed standing up with her as she said her vows and made the man of her dreams her husband. We also picked out and ordered bridesmaid dresses! I love them! The style is perfect and I think everyone is going to look spectacular in them. And we sent out save-the-dates!

November

We booked a DJ. He is perfect for what we have in mind and will work well with our overall vision for the wedding. Thanksgiving was wonderful too! I interviewed for my dream job that later ended up going to someone else.

December

I picked up my wedding dress, found a florist, and we tasted some great wedding cakes! I also had my last Christmas as a Galloway and enjoyed spending it with two wonderful families. A chapter ended with graduation. The job hunt began and hopefully I’ll see the fruits of my labor in the coming weeks. I moved back home and ended an entirely too long long-distance relationship.

2010 was pretty good to me, but 2011 will be my year. I will start a new career, marry my soulmate, start a new adventure into marriage, move into a new place, and witness my love graduating from college. Cheers to a fabulous 2011!

Cowboy Coffee

This morning I made coffee for my dad and myself. Well. I was supposed to put 1 scoop for every 2 cups of coffee – not 2 scoops for every 1… Let’s hope my domestic life post-wedding goes better. I promise I make better coffee than that!

Happy New Years Eve!

New Years Resolutions

I’m sure more and more will be added to my list in the coming days and/or weeks. But for now, here they are…

1. 365 Project. I saw a few of my friends doing this last year and seemed to fizzle out. But I want to do it and do it right this year. Every day, no matter what you’re doing, you take a picture and post it online for all to see. I want to also add a new twist – I want to blog about the pictures too. If I’m bored artsy enough, perhaps I’ll even print them and put them in an album at the end of 2011? This is going to be a big year for me, so I don’t want to miss a single second.

2. More church. I used to go all of the time and felt so good about it. In 2010 I slacked and really am missing that part of my life. This year, I want to go more and participate more and involve myself more.

3. Pride in my appearance. I have dubbed my college years as years filled with t-shirts. But not 2011. I will take more pride in my appearance by wearing less t-shirts and more make-up. Perhaps I’ll even take the time and effort to straighten my hair more? Let’s not get carried away, but it’s a good goal.

That’s it for now. Three big ones. Of course, working out and eating healthy is always on the list. And I could always be a better person. But those are continuous and belong in a separate category away from new years resolutions. Until next time…

I Need a Job (Or At Least a Hobby)

Today, Heather was gone for a total of two hours before the extreme boredom hit. I know. Already. I need to get a job ASAP, though most aren’t going through applications this week. A hobby would be nice alternative for the time being. The only problem is that it can’t cost any money because – as previously mentioned – I do not have a job yet. Hmph. I don’t know how people can enjoy being unemployed. I’m already so bored and ready for something to occupy my time and give me an income. Cross your fingers for me!

Cake Tasting: Results

I promised an entry all about our cake tasting adventure last week, so here it is. We went to three places to taste cakes and get some prices. The first was Delicious Cakes in Southlake, the second was Colleen’s Cakes in Keller, and the third was one I don’t care to name since it was terrible in Arlington.

Delicious cakes was tasty and expensive. They had gorgeous designs, not a lot of flavor choices, and were wanting to charge an arm and a leg for their services. In the cake industry, I still can’t understand the astronomical delivery charges. Plus, Delicious Cakes wanted to charge extra for every little decoration. To get the cakes even remotely in our price range, we would have had to make every cake flavor plain white cake with buttercream icing and no decorations. Ridiculous.

The second place was actually in someone’s home. We were kind of hesitant when we arrived, though the house was nice and clean. However, Colleen blew us away! She presented us with so many cake options that were unique and delicious! Her cake prices were outstanding and she does not charge a delivery fee. Plus, she let me sit down and design each individual layer from scratch with no extra design fees. How incredible! If we go with her (meaning, unless we find a better deal on a better cake), our cake flavors would be the following: white cake with white chocolate mousse for the bottom layer, white cake with key lime mousse for the next layer up, white cake with chocolate/caramel truffle filling for the middle layer, pink champagne cake with mixed berry mousse for the next layer, and white cake with buttered pecan filling for the top. The layer we save will be separated and stored away from the actual cake so we don’t have to worry about what to save and what to cut. Other flavors in the running to swap include: pound cake with raspberry filling, and white cake with strawberry shortcake filling. What are your thoughts?

The last place we went was awful. I ended up wanting to leave the second we got there. We met at a Starbucks, so I have no idea what her cooking facilities look like. She said she had a commercial kitchen, but there was no way for us to tell. She charged almost as much as Delicious Cakes, and her cakes were not very tasty. We’re going to politely decline her services.

Well, that’s a pretty descriptive update from me. For now, we are going with Colleen’s Cakes, but we still need to taste at Simply Cakes in Colleyville, and (time permuting) Patty Cakes in Grapevine. I want to ensure we have a gorgeous and tasty cake for our reception. I won’t give away too much of the details for the cake, but just know what it will be elegant and classy with touches of bling! So excited!

New Years Eve

Trying to find good plans for New Years Eve this year. 2011 is going to be one of the best years of my life and I need to be able to ring it in with the same style and panache as the rest of the year will have. Here’s the unfortunate part – Phillip is working from 3-10 both on New Years Eve and New Years Day. Yeah. I know. Kind of limits our possible plans.

So I’m trying to get creative and find things to do. Just about everyone will be out of town so it’ll pretty much just be us two. Do you have any suggestions?

Christmas with the Galloways

Of course, this one is not over yet – and won’t be until Wednesday when Heather and Samantha leave. I love my family and this has already shaped up to be a pretty relaxing, fun, and family-filled Christmas.

After Samantha got here Saturday, my mom served a phenomenal roast that was delicious! We also opened presents. All of the gifts were so thoughtful and perfect! This year I ended up with some shopping money to go spend on grown-up clothes.

Therefore… yesterday we went shopping!! Samantha, Heather, and I ventured out to Grapevine Mills with everyone else in the world. But it was a successful trip! We went to Victoria’s Secret with the gift cards my parents gave each of us, went to a few other stores, and went to Agaci. Afterwords, we went to Kohls. I ended up buying a big-girl purse and wallet, three shirts, and a dress. It all looks so professional and can be dressed up for work or dressed down for casual hanging out with friends or Phillip. I’m too excited!

Today we are going to Decatur to see my wonderful cousin for lunch and then it’s on to more shopping. Shauna comes over at 4 to see me in my wedding dress!! She’s the last bridesmaid that needs to see it. Plus, I haven’t seen her in forever.

Christmas with the Longs

Last night was Christmas eve with the Longs and Blacks. They are so much fun. I had a great time and a delicious dinner. I am loving the family I’m entering into. They love me so much and want me to join them as much as I want to.

The gifts were great too! David and Betty (Phillip’s aunt and uncle) gave us each a gift card to Banana Republic. Can we say sophisticated shopping spree!? Ben and Amanda gave us the most beautiful embossed monogrammed stationary. Seeing a big “L” flanked by a “P” and “A” was pretty cool and real at the same time. Phillip’s parent got us our bedding set from Macys! I’m so excited about that! Not only do Phillip and I have excellent taste, but we also don’t have to worry about them going out of stock anymore. We got a welcome mat with an “L” on it. Phillip got golf clubs. And I am getting my passport from them as soon as I get the paperwork filled out. Hooray!

Tonight is Christmas with the Galloways. It’ll be nice to spend a whole day and evening with my parents. Delicious food, wonderful family, and hopefully some Christmas lights thrown in there.

Update on cake tastings and holiday debriefing in the next couple of days. Merry Christmas to all!!

Cake Tasting!

Tomorrow is a momentous occasion. We are cake tasting at three locations tomorrow. Phillip, Heather, and I will be going to all, with my mom popping in for one or two. It’ll be exciting to see all of the possibilities and get to taste a whole bunch of wonderful cakes!

Tomorrow we are also going by Texas Star to see about my bridal shower that Heather and Fara are planning for March. A full day of wedding stuff! I’ll let you know how it goes.

Coffee and Pudding

This is my breakfast of champions this morning. I have to have something to eat so I can take my medicine and so far pudding is the only thing that actually sounds good. And today, coffee is an achievement. I haven’t had a “real” cup since Thursday. That’s almost a week. No wonder I’ve been dying over here.

Today I have lunch with a few good friends and sonic happy hour with EMILY GEESLIN! I love having friends around and love spending time with each and every one of them. The rest of today will be spent cooking holiday goodies and maybe venturing out of the house tonight to hang out with more friends. Whoa there. Don’t worry, if I go do something it won’t be wild-and-crazy since I’m still supposed to be taking it easy.

Post Operation

Well yesterday was kind of a blur. I made it through surgery pretty okay and slept a lot. I haven’t been in any real pain either as of now. However. I have been extremely weak, nauseous, and tired from the hydrocodone. I know it’s been less than 48 hours since I had my teeth removed but I’m stopping the hydrocodone. I can’t take these side effects at all. Hopefully since I haven’t had very much pain thus far that removing a pivotal medication won’t affect it too much.

Heather came home last night! She originally wasn’t going to be here until Wednesday, but last night she got here to help take care of me today. Phillip has been a great help too. He stayed with me all afternoon yesterday and today until work. He even brought Heather and me lunch from Chilis! My two best friends in the world have really been there for me and will continue to be until I’m all better. I’m so lucky to have them both! Special shoutout to my mom and dad too - dad took off a whole day of work to take me to my appointment and take care of me; mom is awesome at caring and bringing home the perfect foods.

Today will be filled with more lounging and hopefully getting out of the house at some point. Tomorrow maybe I’ll actually feel all better or at least enough to function? Let’s hope!

Losing My Wisdom Tomorrow

Tomorrow morning at 8:45 I will be losing my wisdom teeth. At 7:45 I wake up to take a happy pill (aka Valium) to loosen up. I’m a little nervous because going fully under anesthesia freaks me out. But I’ll live.

Expect a funny picture posted on my dad’s facebook and possibly a loopy blog post. I have a million medications to be taking and will hopefully be back to functioning by tomorrow night or Tuesday morning.

Back in Bedford

With my diploma in hand. Yesterday I walked the stage and got that wonderful piece of paper that says I'm a graduate. I was surrounded by family and friends an could not have felt more loved. Thank you to all who made it. I truly appreciate each and every one of you.

So yesterday, after graduation, we packed the cars, ate lunch, and left for good. I'll be back at some point. But for now, I will be home.

Last night as I started to get things settles in Bedford, it felt so surreal. This just feels like I'm home for Christmas break or that I'm moving into a new place in January. But this is for good.

No more goodbyes for Phillip and me. No more sappy missing him posts. Nope, those will be replaced by mire eventful scoop about both of us - instead of just about me. So. Get ready.

We are on our way to Christmas in east Texas now. Lunch and spending time with Phillip's extended family. Then it's back to Bedford for the night and wisdom teeth removal tomorrow.

The End

Today was my last final exam of my undergraduate experience - and last one for a while since I'm not going to graduate school just yet. It's a weird feeling. When you're constantly having to study for things and work on homework, your free time is typically spent feeling guilty or like there's something else you should be doing. But now, that's not the case. And it won't be the case unless/until I go back to school to further my education.

I finish up working today too - at 3:30 this afternoon. I was originally scheduled from 1-5, but since I finished the exam early, I came in early and am getting off early. It'll be weird to leave this place. It's the shortest time I've ever spent at a job, but it feels like I've learned more than any of my other jobs combined. They've let me do so many things and I am so grateful to have had this opportunity. This job has changed my outlook of my future and what I want to do with my life. It's crazy how something so insignificant as a student worker job over the course of seven months can change you so much. Now if I could just find a big girl job that can do the same... But that's another story.

After work, I am going to do some Christmas shopping and pack up the kitchen and the remainder of my closet. My goal is to finish a lot tonight so tomorrow won't be as difficult or overwhelming. Friday is a trip to the dumpster and greeting family that are coming in town. Hooray! It's finally time to graduate and get out of this place for good. I'll miss a lot of things, but will enjoy being back in the same city as Phillip.

Now, on to graduation, east Texas Christmas, wisdom teeth removal, cake tasting, and Christmas. What a busy upcoming week!

Allergies + Final Exams + Thoughts

My allergies suck right now. I've never been one to succomb to the dreaded yearly saga. However, this year for some reason, I am being attacked. There is something in the air that my body is revolting against. I'm miserable. Who knew allergies would be borderline dibilitating?

This morning I have final exam one of two. They both consist[ed] of 200 questions each. Crazy. I know. What kind of professor does that - especially in a class with a whole lot of graduating seniors. Mean. It wasn't awful but it wasn't great either. Some questions were even impossible. And some questions made me laugh. We'll see. I'm pretty sure I am at the very least still graduating.

I have tons of thoughts and obligations circling my head right now - mainly of the financial nature. I need to find a subleaser and a job as soon as possible. Either would be nice but I would love both. I've tried really hard to sublease and have gone down every avenue with no luck. Perhaps it's because I'm looking for a "roommate" subleaser instead of someone to take the whole unit.

Today I picked up my cap and gown from the book store. I guess this whole graduating thing is really happening. The past couple of days have made me really ready to leave. I can't explain it, but all of a sudden everything is making me want to get out of here as soon as graduation is over with. I'm ready to move on with my life and get on to the real world. I'm over the immaturity of college and dealing with people who aren't in the same place in life as I am - and don't understand my mature priorities. 5 more days!

Another Day at the Office

I have been working a lot lately. I asked for more hours to have some spending money in case I don't get a job as soon as I would like - and they gave me more hours. Today I have been here since 8 and will be leaving at 5. I guess this is what the 'real world' is all about? It hasn't been so bad. I honestly think if I were full-time somewhere, I could do this. Sitting at my desk with nothing to do, however.... not so much.

I am pretty tired and can't wait to sleep in tomorrow. I have been a bum all week because nobody has invited me to do anything, and now that I'm exhausted, people are getting upset that I don't want to jump up and run around. Um, hello! Why do I have to go on your schedule? Whatever.

Graduation is creeping up really soon and I still have so much to do. I feel like things ar egetting tense as well. I want to just leave here already. Do I love my friends who have stuck by me? Absolutely. And I will miss them. But I'm ready to leave. I'm ready to enter into the next phase of my life and leave college behind.

Throughout the past year or so, I feel like I have matured a great deal. I've always felt more mature than everyone around me and that's still true right now. I guess some people can't comprehend maturity as fast as others. This is a key reason why I am ready to enter the real world - and have a husband as mature as me. I am at a very different phase in my life than everyone else. My friends are stressed with organization meetings, loaded schedules filled with parties, or having enough time to do some sort of fun activity.

But me? Here's the difference between all of my friends and me... I wish those were my stresses. I have to worry about making loan payments, planning a wedding, finding a place to live in June, moving, figuring out a career path and finding a job, subleasing an apartment, and other financial obligations. Social obligations are a whole lot nicer than financial ones.

This isn't to make my life sound so much more complicated than everyone else that surrounds me by any means. It's merely me venting about the fact that I have to constantly work around their 'busy' socially-motivated schedules and make them angry when I can't put my previous more crucial engagements aside for their frivelous activities. Sometimes there are more important things in life. And it would be nice to have more than a couple of friends who understand and appreciate that.

Sorry for the ranting session. Just had to get that out.

The Little Engine That Could

When I think about all that is going to happen between now and Christmas, I get a little overwhelmed. I kind of have a break between now and my final exams, but once Saturday gets here, things get crazy until Christmas Eve.

I still need to pack.
Yep, I have made zero progress since I went home last weekend. Tonight I fully plan on washing clothes and getting a good chunk of packing done. Hopefully. I mean, I have been planning on doing this every night, with no success. But tonight it needs to get done. I need to pack up everything humanly possible so I don't have to worry about it next week and hopefully will be able to send a few boxes back home with Phillip - since I get to see him Saturday night for a bit!

Final exams need to be studied for.
I have senioritis really badly right and need some motivation to study for these last two difficult exams. I'm in denial. Sunday and Tuesday will be devoted to studying my little heart out. My two finals are 200 questions each and will take the full two hour time slot given for the exams.

I've been working up a storm.
Tomorrow and Tuesday I work from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. like a real job. I also work in every bit of free time I have between now and Wednesday. Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. I will leave this job with a slightly empty heart. I have worked for Texas A&M University's student affairs for two and a half years. I've grown accustomed to how they run and have met some phenomenal people - both with Aggie Access and Health Education and some people that have been involved with both. I have learned so much at this job and gained valuable experience.

I'm graduating in nine days!
And I'll be finished with this long distance relationship business too. Phew. All my hard work will pay off when I cross that stage and get my wonderful diploma. Leaving right afterward and heading back to Bedford. So long College Station. You have been good to me but it's time for me to leave.

East Texas Christmas is scheduled for Sunday, December 19th.
I'm heading out there with Phillip and his family for the annual Christmas get together for that side of the family. Each year it is a lot of fun and I like being able to get to know all of them. I love his whole family and they will be my family as well in a little over six months.

I'm losing my wisdom on December 20th.
I am getting my wisdom teeth pulled. Merry Christmas and Happy Graduation to me! Hopefully I'll be up and running in a matter of two days. I know it's an ambitious goal to recover that quickly, but I must in time to eat all of the holiday goodies.

We are tasting cakes.
On the Thursday before Christmas, we are going to a few places to taste cakes and get some price quotes. So far, my mom and I have tasted cake and received a quote from one place. That day we will go to two places, and hopefully a third if they can fit us in. I'm ready to see what's out there and get some great advice. I don't really know what I want when it comes to cakes, so it'll be fun to get different interpretations and to taste yumminess. I am also going with Heather during that day to meet with a lady from Texas Star. That's where Heather and Fara are likely to host one of my bridal showers. I'm super excited!

Well, that's a basic run down of what's going on in my life at this point. Tune in over the next several days to witness my coping with my busy schedule.

It's About That Time

Well, readers, it's time for an official announcement. This is something you have anxiously awaited for over a month and I hope I don't disappoint you. I've had a few days to process it and can now let all of you know....

I did not get the job at SMU.

Yes, I am slightly heartbroken. And yes, I did tear up a little. And yes, I am getting tired of being turned down (this makes me 0-3 for career attempts). But I know there is a plan.

I am still one lucky girl. I am thankful that I had the opportunity to go through the process. I am thankful that I am still graduating in ten days. I am thankful to find jobs to apply for - even if a million other people are applying as well. I am thankful to have such a strong support system that has never once allow me to feel like I am the reason I haven't gotten a job yet.

Now what? Well I'll keep applying for everything, like I have been, and am going to send some emails to inquire about making me a job.

I feel like this while process is like trying to fin the dream guy (it's only fitting that I has a hard time since finding my soulmate came so easily). I am searching. I am applying for and interviewing with prospects. Sometimes my heart will get broken. But at the end of the journey, I will be so much more appreciative of what I end up with.

Sleep

Tonight I get to go to bed whenever I want and get to sleep in tomorrow morning however late I want. Glorious. I haven’t been able to do this in a very long time and am ready to just relax. Oh how I long to sleep in and do nothing tomorrow morning (except enjoy my delicious Butter Toffee coffee, care of Karen - my future mother-in-law). Here’s to a good night’s sleep.

No More Classes

Today was my last class for at least a very long time – forever if I decide not to go to graduate school, though it’s unlikely I won’t go at some point in my life. I haven’t really come to terms with it yet. I guess I’m still in denial. It just feels like the ending of another semester. But this one’s my last. It’ll probably sink in when everyone comes back in January and I’m hopefully working like crazy to make some hopefully decent money.

Tomorrow I am going to relax and work a little. Perhaps I’ll start reading a book. I don’t like reading. But then again, maybe that’s always been the case because I’ve always had a required book to read. There’s a chance I love reading, if it is purely for enjoyment. Hm. I have about five books that I keep reading half of and forgetting about, only to pick back up and read the same half several months later. Let’s see if I can actually remember to read at least one all the way through. Doubtful.

My boss gave me a ton of extra hours this week and next. I requested as many as possible, not expecting her to actually give them to me. I’m so very thankful, but it’s going to be exhausting. Two days I’ll actually work from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. That’s big girl hours. And I’ll get a nice pay check weeks after leaving this place that will be a nice parting gift after Christmas wipes out my bank account.

That reminds me. It’s time to get serious about Christmas shopping. I already have gifts in the works for both sets of my parents. Now I just need to figure stuff out for friends, siblings, and that crazy fiance of mine. My parents already got Phillip the perfect gift. Now I have to try to find something that will at least be half as good. We’ll see. Maybe I’ll pull the whole wife thing and just take him with me to buy what he wants and then wrap it for him to pretend to be surprised when he opens it. Hah. Well, I don’t want to be there yet.

13 More Days of College

It’s getting a little more real, but I still can’t believe I’m leaving this place soon. It’s been my home for three and a half years. I’ve learned where all the eating places are and what back roads and short cuts to take to avoid traffic. I know the ins and outs of this place, and I realized on my drive back this afternoon that I will no longer use my Bryan College Station knowledge. Weird.

In less than two weeks, I will be back home in HEB. The ins and outs I learned all growing up will go back into effect. It will be back to a life of taking the freeway every time I want to go anywhere, having my coffee made for me in the mornings, and home cooked free meals each night. It’s bittersweet.

I’m closing one chapter, semi-re-opening another, and about to start a whole new book come June. I feel like I’m at this huge crossroads and have mixed feelings. The biggest emotion is excitement and eagerness to get out of this long distance relationship business. But I am feeling slight nostalgia for the good ol’ college years, as well as apprehensive about developing a dependence on my family once again – only to be jolted back into independence in June. Phew. I’m just all kinds of jumbled up.

Much To-Do About Nothing

I'm laying in bed at home with nothing to do. It feels weird. I have been constantly going and going for days now. This almost feels like miserable boredom but it's not. So much happened yesterday, so much is happening today, and so much is happening tomorrow.

Yesterday I drove in after class. Once I got to my house, I had just enough time to put my stuff down before my mom joined me to go pick up my dress. It is perfect. It is the right dress, the right color, and the right length. What a relief. As I stood there in that dress, I realized that I AM a bride. It's done. Official. Dress looking is over and this is the EXACT thing I'll wear in our wedding. Crazy.

When I got back from picking up my dress, Phillip picked me up to head to the high school playoff game. We won in the last 3 seconds! That was the most exciting high school football moment ever.

Today, my mom and I are going floral window shopping. I have no clue what's out there so this will give us the opportunity to look without the pressure of needing a decision today. Plus, I get to spend time with my mom. :)

Tomorrow I eat lunch with Phillip and his family before going back to College Station for the work Christmas party. This is my last weekend home before being back for good. It feels strange to say that!

Wedding Dress Tomorrow!!

After class tomorrow, I will be heading home again to pick up my wedding dress!!! At 5:00 I will have it in my possession. It makes everything even more real. It’ll be the last dress I wear as a Galloway and the first dress I wear as a Long. This is big. And it’s so beautiful. The most beautiful dress I have ever seen. I feel stunning in it and it makes me feel like I’m the prettiest girl in the whole world. Phillip will fall in love with me all over again once he sees me in it on our wedding day. Perhaps he’ll faint?? Haha I hope not! I’ll settle for him turning all red and splotchy. ;)

Beginning of the End

So tonight, I donated my dresser. This is a huge deal and the start of me moving out. I mean, last weekend I did take home a whole car filled with boxes and such, but this was the first item that actually made the room feel empty.

I took my bed apart and put it up against the wall. I was going to take it to the dump tonight (let’s face it, the bed has seen better days – like when it was first bought like 50 years ago) but it was only open until 5. So it will sit against my wall ready to go until I can take care of it.

So what am I doing about my sleeping arrangements, you may ask. Well, I am currently on a queen double-stuffed air mattress. Is that the correct way to describe it? Eh. You know what I mean. It’s extra high off the ground.

So I rearranged my room to accommodate my new relocation of things. I think it looks pretty nice, considering the circumstances. Bedside tables and TV are gone. Grandma Ruth Long’s cedar chest is my bedside companion until the 18th (which is in a short 17 days!). We’ll see how tonight goes. I actually already think this air mattress might be better for me than the old heap of free junk I’ve been sleeping on. It’s been good to me, but all of a sudden that back-hurting-uncomfortable-sleep thing, that previous owners had warned me about, started with a vengeance.

Welp. I have a final exam tomorrow morning that I should probably be more worried about than I am. That’s what happens when you’re making a solid A in the class. I’ll look over the study guide once more and relax until calling it a night.

Under the Radar

I am aware it has been an awful long time since I’ve posted a blog entry. I am so sorry to all of you for keeping you in the dark when it comes to my life. A full and random update is in order!

The DJ appointment went better than great. We booked him!! He is the perfect fit for what we are going for. He will be fun but extremely professional and will take our reception from perfect to epic. Be prepared. You will be blown away, as we have. Special props to my friend, Emily Geeslin, for the recommendation.

Manda’s baby shower was great too. I’m still waiting to hear what she wants for a gift – mine will most likely come after Jaquelyn is born. It was great to see how much love is already being given to that precious baby girl. She has so many people patiently awaiting her arrival and I can’t wait to meet her! As a side note, all of the cute baby clothes and goodies made me baby crazy again. Don’t worry though, Phillip and I are a long way away from being ready for a family. But still, it made me slightly jealous to think of the gift the Regalados will get come January.

I was exhausted yesterday. I decided to stay an extra night in Bedford to avoid the crazy traffic that was already piling up on I35 by noon Sunday. So I made the trek at 5:20 yesterday morning. Needless to say, I was in bed before 10 and asleep shortly thereafter. I haven’t been that tired in a very long time. I’m still feeling residual tired effects.

Well there it was. I would post more, but my fingers are already hurt. School is wrapping up and senioritis is in full swing. I’d say I’m in stage 4 of the sickness with a terrible prognosis until December 18th. In less than three weeks, I will be home for good, bachelor’s degree in hand.

Still no word from SMU… Supposed to hear some time this week…

Successful Thanksgiving

Yesterday was probably the best Thanksgiving I have ever had. It was so relaxing and fun. Not a dull moment and not a bad thought. It was great!

At noon, I had thanksgiving lunch with Phillip, his parents, and Tabo. It was nice to have a small intimate meal before the craziness of my house. Afterwards we came over to my house for a second lunch and stayed for the rest of the evening. And last night, all of our family friends came over for our unofficial annual post-meal football watching and hanging out.

It was a great day. Our wedding registries are officially ready to be viewed/purchased from. We might be adding more items as it hopefully gets depleted. But it’s ready. Today I have an eye appointment at 11:45, then we’re rushing off to Dallas for a meeting with a potential DJ at 1:30. I’ll let you know how it goes.

We Came, We Saw, We Registered

Today was absolutely exhausting but so much fun. Phillip and I got a whole lot done and are proud of our selections. As previously mentioned, our registries are not 100% finished until we sit down and adjust quantities and delete duplicates. However, it is nearing completion. I can’t wait to see what all we get for our future home and wonderful life together. Hooray!

Home - Current and Future

Guess who drove home last night? Yep. That would be me. In love

Elephant walk was fun, and so was the Thanksgiving dinner at my apartment. Afterwards, I drove off to avoid some of the terrible traffic on I35. I know what you’re thinking, what about bonfire? Well, due to a burn ban, they did not light the stack. So an executive decision was made within our group to forego this year’s. Therefore, I left at 8:20 last night.

I missed all but 10 minutes worth of traffic, and from Hillsboro on was glorious and free from any congestion. Poor Heather was stuck and her trip of 3 hours was turned into 4 and a half.

So now I sit in my living room after a cup of coffee and a nice shower (with hard water, might I add), about to finish getting ready to go register. I’m excited but nervous at the same time. It’ll be fun to relax and just pick out what we want, but the aftermath of the reality check when we go through them all tomorrow will be exhausting. Tomorrow we’ll sit down with all of our items printed out and really decide our favorites and what Phillip we happened to scan in the heat-of-the-moment.

I’m excited and ready to venture out to Target, Macys, and Crate&Barrel this morning/afternoon. Wish us luck!

Elephants, Turkeys, Fire, and Ice

Tomorrow is Elephant Walk and Bonfire. I'm excited to participate in my final traditions at Texas A&M. It’s kind of bittersweet. I’ll enjoy being a part of the school one last time but also realize what I’ll be missing once I’m gone.

Today was the last day of work for me for a week. I’m sure I’ll be less happy about this when my next paycheck comes, but as of now, I’m excited to have a break. I love my job, but it’s time to have some days off.

My two classes Wednesday have been “cancelled”. I say that because he heavily hinted that he’s not going to count attendance but could not officially say anything because it is against University rules. Therefore, I will be heading home Wednesday morning instead of Wednesday afternoon. This is great because I’ll get an even bigger head start on holiday traffic and will get home even earlier to get a bigger start on the wedding registry. It’s going to be crazy and exhausting.

This week, once I get home, it’s going to get super cold. It’s supposed to be near or below freezing Thursday and Friday. I’m stoke. I love the cold weather and am ready for it to actually feel like winter and the holiday season. Perfect for a fire, cozy socks, a white chocolate peppermint mocha from starbucks, and being surrounded by so many people I love. Did I mention I love Thanksgiving and Christmas!?

So overdue

Tonight has been perfect. We went to the movies and had olive garden for dinner. Phillip is almost finished with his paper that's due tomorrow. Relaxing the rest of the evening and heading back at 7 am tomorrow.

This has already proved to be well worth the drive and well worth waking up early tomorrow morning. I have missed him terribly and am so glad we got to spend quality time together before entering the realm of family thanksgiving.

Oh and did I mention phillip is now sporting a really really short new hair cut? It's growing on me. :)

Waco Bound

Phillip has arranged for us to meet in Waco for the evening. I am too excited! It has been three weeks since we last saw each other and that is entirely too long if you ask me.

So at 3:00 I will venture out on highway six for a much needed date night with the most incredible fiancé a girl could ask for.

Breakfast Tacos

So this morning I got to sleep in. I awoke feeling well-rested and started drinking my usually morning cup of coffee. Then it hit me. Hunger. But alas, I get tired of eating granola every day for breakfast and knew there wasn’t much around the apartment to eat for lunch. Therefore, I made the executive decision to jump up out of bed, throw on some clothes and a hat, grab my cup of coffee, and drive to FUEGO for their breakfast tacos. Win. Definitely the best decision I’ve made all day. They were absolutely phenomenal.

On today’s agenda: baby shower shopping (with hopefully more success than yesterday), going to see what this Brazos Valley Craft Show is all about, coffee with Grace, and watching my Aggies BTHO Nebraska while beating the world record for most students at a college football game. It’s a sold out game and they’ve opened up “cowboys-style” standing room only sections. I get a front row view from my couch. Glorious.

Full Fledged Holiday Season

It's official. I have now entered the holiday season. It is one week until Thanksgiving and one week until the Christmas season can officially begin without judgement. I have Christmas music on right now, it's finally gotten cold in College Station, and my boss has a Christmas scent machine thing going in her office.

Bundling up with a warm Tazo Vanilla Roobius (spelling) Tea Latte and venturing out into the cold just makes it feel like Christmas. Sometimes I want to live further north where it gets cold earlier and snows. However, in Texas it's nice that holiday season starts at the exact time the cold finally arrives. If I moved north, I'd probably start decorating for Christmas in September.

Tonight I will probably bake my apple bread that I've been waiting to make. I finished a final exam last night and am done until December 2nd. This means I have about two weeks of sweet nothingness and wonderful time with family.

My plans for the next week or so? Ok, I'll give you the lowdown:

Monday: Class and Work.
This will be nothing special, but I suppose getting through it will make me that much more thankful for a break.

Tuesday: Elephant Walk and Thanksgiving Dinner and Bonfire.
I participated in Junior Elephant Walk last year. It was the celebration and recognition of the Junior class rising to become the Senior class. We walked around campus to key spots to get the spirit up. This year, for Elephant Walk (which Jr. E-Walk sprouted from), we will be walking to key spots again, for the ceremonious last time in our years here at Texas A&M. Elephants walk to their most memorable spots before they die. This is the symbolism for the day.

Tabitha, Grace, Emily, and myself will also be celebrating Thanksgiving together Tueday night. I'm making scalloped sweet potatoes and stuffing balls. Grace is making green bean casserole and some pies. Tabitha and Emily are still undecided but it'll all come together. I'm excited to get to have a pre-Thanksgiving celebration with the best girls I've had in college.

After dinner, we'll go to the off campus bonfire. They moved it off campus after the university-recognized bonfire collapsed on campus (exactly 11 years ago today). I haven't been to bonfire since I've been here, so I figured this year would be perfect, seeing as it is my last opportunity to attend at a student.

Wednesday: Two Classes and Driving Home and Wedding Registry.
My two classes are still meeting. It's ridiculous. Almost everyone cancels class the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. But my notorious professor is definitely keeping us in attendance. Therefore, I'll be leaving right after the second class, and should be home by about 3:30 or so, pending traffic. Phillip and I are taking on the monstrous task of registering that night. We'll see how that goes.

Thursday: Thanksgiving.
Samantha, Gary, and Jeremy will be joining us, as well as Phillip, for a yummy traditional meal. It's always really relaxed but still festive. I love that we don't make a huge fuss and don't have some intricate time table. We'll eat around the time the Cowboys game starts, and most likely the Morrisons will join us for dessert and hanging out. And yes, wine will be involved.

Friday: Eye Appointment and DJ Interviewing and More.
I have to get my eyes examined for new contacts. It has to be done. Then afterwards, Phillip, Heather, and I are going to Dallas to meet with a DJ. Hopefully he's as good in person as he seems and as good as his reviews from credible sources. The rest of the day will be just hanging out with the family and maybe Christmas decorating/light looking. [Or, as Tabitha calls it, "Christmas Lighting."]

Saturday: Baby Jaquelyn's Baby Shower!
I can't wait to spoil this baby rotten. She has already received so many gifts, but now we get to formally celebrate her arrival in January. I'm so excited to see everyone and show Manda how much we all love her and her baby. I just need to go shopping soon for the perfect gift.

Sunday: Driving Back.
Sadly, I'll be leaving on Sunday. I hate leaving, especially after a long weekend of great food, wonderful friends and family, Phillip, and love. Luckily, once I go back, I'll have less than 3 weeks before returning FOR GOOD.

Phew. That was a long entry! Sorry about all of that writing.

Quick Update

I emailed SMU yesterday to inquire about the status of my application. That sounded fancy, didn’t It? I got an email back this morning. He said they’re still interviewing and hope to have a decision by the end of the month. This is great news! This means they haven’t made a decision yet and I’m still being considered. Please continue with the prayers, everyone. As much as I’d like to think I’m not already in love with this job, I am. I want to say that I haven’t put all of my eggs in one basket and want to think that I’m not too obsessed with this job. But the truth is, I want this job more than grad school or nursing school combined. This is my passion and I’d love to be able to use it. But if nothing else, this was a good experience and further confirms what I’m supposed to do with my life.

Great Day So Far

I haven't had a great day in a long time. Today has been great so far. I had a great cup of coffee. A money situation was finally solved. And great songs keep coming on the radio.

Now to take this day from great to perfect, I just need SMU to call and offer me a second interview. If they don't by the time I get into work, I'm sending the email. Prayers please!!

ATX

So yesterday, shortly after updating the blog, I had a sudden burst of spontaneity. Heather was bragging about this magnificent restaurant she had discovered and I was super jealous. So then she says, "Why don't you drive in and join us?"

I had all of my to-dos completed yesterday and nothing for the remainder of the evening. I had class this morning at 9:10 that I couldn't miss, but that was the only catch in the plan. So I went. I got there, we hung out, went to the place - totally worth it, by the way - and then I left Heather's place at 6:00am to come back to College Station. Success.

This restaurant last night was called Halcyon. It's a coffee bar with alcoholic coffees and espressos. There was also table-top smores! Definitely worth the 12 hour stay. And I got to see Heather. :)

“I’m Going to Muster Every Ounce of Confidence I Have… For You, I Will”

Good song. Great song for an afternoon like this one. I feel like it’s so much later than it is since I woke up so early, but that’s a good thing. Today I cleaned my room, cleared out my closet for donations, packed up my summer clothes to get ready for moving day, and am currently in the middle of laundry. It’s been a pretty productive day so far.

For the rest of the evening, I’m going to continue to get things done and relax at the same time. Maybe I’ll finally make the apple bread I bought the ingredients for last weekend. Maybe. We’ll see.

Registries

So now that Phillip and I are getting closer to figuring out what kind of housing we’re looking at for after marriage, we’re getting a better feel for what we would like to register for. Therefore, we think we’re about ready to take that scanner gun and go wild.

We have decided, after thorough window shopping of course, that we will be registering at Crate and Barrel, Target, and Macy’s. We have also already registered through Carnival Cruises for our honeymoon registry. Link will be posted at the bottom if you’re interested in checking it out or shopping for an early Christmas present. Winking smile

Our strategy is going to be to go through all three stores and register for anything and everything we think is cool and/or useful. Then, before posting for all of the world to see and buy, we will print out the lists of all and compare to find the best items and to eliminate unnecessary or doubled items. Then ta-da! We will post them for all of you to start shopping away!

We will tackle this important task hopefully the night before Thanksgiving. We’re afraid that trying to register during the holiday season will be a nightmare, and if we wait until after Christmas, we’ve missed the opportunity to give our friends and families a ready-made Christmas list. Therefore, when I get home that Wednesday before Thanksgiving, we’re going to attempt to run to all three stores and go crazy. That way, the stores will all be stocked up, but no one will be shopping since black Friday sales are unbeatable. Good idea? I sure hope so.

The breakdown, you ask? Well, we won’t really know until we get there. However, from just looking around, we kind of have an idea as to what we like from all of the stores. At Macy’s, I really like the glassware, kitchen gadgets and cookware. At Crate and Barrel, we’ll probably register for some funky décor pieces, as well as lighting, serving dishes, and kitchen décor. Then there is Target. Target will pretty much be whatever we want, as well as some inexpensive artwork, cleaning supplies, and what little furniture we still need. Up for grabs at any of these stores is bedding, bathroom décor, and kitchen dishes. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Spa Music

So I’m listening to my spa station on Pandora. I love this station because it calms me before bed and actually provides a pretty good study soundtrack, when needed. It makes me feel so relaxed and gets me in the mood for sleep. Kind of like winding down, I guess.

But sometimes it also makes me feel a little down because it can be the opposite of uplifting. Let’s not kid ourselves. I’ve had a rough week. Things haven’t really been going my way and I’ve had a lot of things to stress about. I’m looking forward to a new week where hopefully some really good things happen like a job interview.

Tomorrow morning is the annual 5K for testicular cancer at work. I have to wake up super early and work the event for about three hours or so. At least I get paid for it and get to be oh-so-official with a stopwatch and walkie-talkie. Legit. I know.

Well, good night everyone!

BIG WEEEKEND

But it’s not necessarily big for me. You see, I have friends that are going through some really tough stuff right now and this weekend may be a very significant turning point. And other friends are getting their rings and/or dunking this weekend. I have nothing to do but be on standby for those who need comfort and be a fun friend to those who are celebrating. What a mixed up weekend, but an important one nonetheless. Phew. Let’s see where this is all going…

7 More Months

Today is the seven month mark. We only have seven more months of waiting and planning. We only have seven more months without each other. To say I can’t wait is an understatement.

It’s hard to believe we’re already here. Looking back on our long engagement, it sure seems like it went by so quickly. Everyone said it would and it did. It felt like it was dragging on at the time – and still does – but when I wake up this morning with only 7 months to go, it seems like the last 14 months passed in the blink of an eye.

The has come to dive into all of this wedding business and plan a wedding. Save-the-dates should be delivered today or tomorrow via snail mail. We’re meeting with a potential DJ over Thanksgiving. I get my wedding dress then too. About a week later, we’re also hopefully meeting with a potential invitation maker. I’m getting too excited. December is going to be a month of planning. Hopefully, by January 1st, we will have a DJ, cake baker, invitation maker, and florist. That’s my goal at least.

I can’t believe how fast this is approaching! A couple of showers are beginning to be planned as well. I’m so excited for all of the craziness and then to have a sense of calm from the moment we say our vows. That feeling of contentment is one I yearn for. That calm after the storm, followed by a week of just relaxing with Phillip.

RELAX

So tonight, since my two hard tests are out of the way and things are kind of starting to settle, I’ve decided to take it easy. I haven’t done this in a while. I mean, I have rested and have relaxed, but never with nothing to do.

No job hunting tonight. No wedding planning. No stressing. I’m just going to enjoy the next hour or so before drifting off to sleep. Tomorrow starts the cleaning movement for the roomie’s RING DAY FRIDAY!!

7 months, 20 hours!! Almost 7 months!

Happy 300th Post?

Yes, you read right, this is the 300th post on the blog. So it should be exciting, right? Well I've been waiting for over 24 hours to update so I could try to post something uplifting and happy, but the truth is, I'm feeling so bogged down.

I have some people close to me going through some really hard times right now and it's hard to focus on school and what I need to do because I'm hurting too much for them. I find myself trying to figure out ways to fix it all instead of being happy for the good things happening.

I'm also still waiting on SMU. I'm beginning to think that I didn't get the job and that this job hunting is yielding no results. I've applied to over 20 jobs and SMU is the only one that really seemed interested. So what am I supposed to do if the place I feel like I'm meant to be at doesn't want me to? What if I got this fancy college degree to be a receptionist? I really am turning away from the idea of nursing school even more these days, but wonder if it needs to be a good "back-up plan."

I need to sublease my apartment too. No nibblers yet on the facebook ad and I'm afraid things aren't looking up yet. I still have time, but not as much as I'd like. I want the perfect subleaser to come along and take this burden off of my shoulders. If not, this is yet another thing contributing to the stress of finding a job to pay that rent.

Please start looking up. I'm feeling pretty deflated right now.

Homesick

I’m suddenly getting the feeling of homesickness. I always get this way when the holidays start rolling around. This year I get to be home, but for some reason, that makes me even more homesick. I’m ready for Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas traditions. This year will be sweeter than any other year – to be home for good – but I just can’t wait for it.

So now I sit here, wanting to go home and knowing I won’t be able to for another two weeks. It’ll be quiet and boring. I’ll have friends to hang out with, but not non-stop. There is a chance, however, that I could be going home for a second interview, if SMU calls me. I’m still hopeful!

Marriage Introspection

So as I mentioned in my previous post, a lot of marriage activity has occurred recently. It’s made me very introspective and inspired to actually think about the meaning of marriage.

“The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.” 1 Corinthians 7:3

I view marriage as a contract between two soulmates. I fully believe that God has put perfect matches on this earth. If a person never finds this second half, perhaps there never was one. I know this is a hard concept for some people fearing loneliness, but I think it’s a fact. But this is beside my point.

My point is that marriage is a shared and sacred bond. It is a bond in which both parties must equally commit to – in the form of a marriage ceremony. If one person does not agree to the extent of the other, the union is going to be one of regret and turmoil.

I never like to compare anyone else to Phillip and myself, because I don’t want to make others feel like we are experts or on a higher pedestal than others. However, I am partial to the way we have done things and I feel like our union in marriage is going to be one of the strongest possible.

Phillip and I have a mutual understanding of and respect for each other. Throughout our relationship, we have always supported each other nonstop and have encouraged the other to follow their dreams. That’s one of the great reasons we work – we will never resent one another for holding the other back in life. This is probably the main reason we have waited this long to get married. We knew that our dreams of college and our futures were not identical – though we did know we would stay together – so we kept on going and working on our relationship while in separate cities.

We also know how to discuss issues and make compromises. We by no means have a perfect relationship in which no one fights or argues, but we always keep the core of our love in mind when in heated discussions. We can disagree while still being so in love with each other. I think that’s the biggest thing we can do to make this relationship work forever.

The other important part of that is confidentiality. Heather tells me time and time again that one thing she admires about Phillip and me is that we keep our disagreements and faults private. Some days he drives me crazy, and some days he doesn’t like what I do. But, we never bring the outside world into the middle of it. I have found that when you “vent” to someone about an issue you’re having with your other half, it doesn’t make that person identify with you more or feel for you more – it only gives them less confidence in your relationship. We are so thankful to have so many supporters, and a large part of that is the fact that we keep our issues to ourselves. Afterall, it’s nobody else’s business and we can figure things out on our own – another key part of our “successful” fights.

And finally, the fourth part of our successful relationship is always keeping things light. Sometimes the best ending to a fight is just laughing. Even after over 6 years of being together, I still find him hilarious and he still finds me goofy.

I know this entry sounds preachy and I’m sure I lost half of you after the first paragraph. But I felt the need to express myself. In today’s world, marriage is uncertain and more often than not, a bride and groom are not on the same page – and that comes to haunt them later in their marriage.

I once heard that partners should be “equally yoked” and I fully believe that. You should be on the same level in every way. Things don’t have to match-up exactly 100% of the time, but the main things should be agreed upon. This entry pretty much explains why Phillip and I have been together so long and why we will continue to make it in a world that puts odds against a lasting marriage.

Marriage is about more than love and more than fidelity. It’s about happiness and security and having a best friend by your side for life. I know Phillip will never leave me and I know I will never leave him. We have reached that level of commitment and I only hope that each and every one of you have or will as well.

In 7 months, 3 days, and 22 hours, Phillip will fulfill his marriage duty to me, and I will do the same for him.

A Reflection on the Night He Proposed and of Things to Come

Last night, Grace’s roommate got engaged. Things like this remind me of the night when Phillip proposed. I remember his heart beating so fast, and me standing in disbelief. I remember the beautiful meal before the big moment, and him holding my hand in the car just minutes before we walked up to the hotel room – and me thinking that I’ve never been so happy in my life, this being thought even before he proposed.

I also remember the champagne having a late arrival, and the weird animal print robes in the room, and the fact that it rained the whole time. [Luckily I love rain, though most people think this is a negative for such a great moment.] I remember as many details as possible so one day I won’t have to strain to remember.

I love Phillip more than words could even express and I can’t wait to make him my husband. In this crazy swarm of wedding planning and finishing up with school, I hardly have time to actually sit down and express how ready I am for this next chapter in my life.

Over the course of the next 7ish months, I will graduate from college, move twice, start a new job, and get married. That’s a lot to be going on. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, but it’s crazy to think about all of these changes that are going to be happening to me in such a short amount of time.

But, I am ready because I have the best friend anyone could ask for by my side. I have someone who supports me without even knowing what I stand for, someone who comforts me without understanding the problem, someone who loves what I’m doing without even being here with me, and someone who loves me without even having to think.

That’s powerful stuff right there. I know this. I know what I have and know what I never want to lose. He is my match and my other half. God put us together for a very powerful reason – soulmates. I can’t wait to enter into that final era of commitment and be able to share every waking – and sleeping – moment with him.

“Christmas is Coming Again!”

Yes, I’m already looking forward to the wonderful holiday season. Commercials are beginning to air and food network is about to enter its holiday recipe season. I cannot contain my excitement any longer. No. Really. I’m listening to Christmas music right now.

I love the holidays. It’s a feel I have that can’t be explained. It puts a smile on my face every year. I love the family time and wonderful food, warmth inside with cold outside, and festivities.

This year is going to be extra special since I don’t have to make that dreaded trip back to College Station after a great couple of weeks with the family. I don’t have to say goodbye and don’t feel like I have to cram both holiday activities and to-dos in the same time frame. I can be settled and warm and not have to upheave myself at the conclusion.

48 Days, 12 Hours, and 17 minutes until Christmas!
7 months, 5 days, and 6 hours until the wedding! [I’m going to start being more precise since we now have an official time – 6:00pm!!]

Mission: Save-The-Date

It is nearly complete. The two week-long initiative to send out save-the-dates is almost done. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself for the next few months. I mean, until wedding invites go out, my hand's muscle might return back to its normal state. Then I'll have no strength for addressing invitations. Oh dear.

Everyone at work loved the wonderful cards created by my wonderful sister (and maid of honor) Heather. They are perfect and I could not have picked a better one, even if we found one remotely close to what I had envisioned. It's cool to see everything start coming to life.

I still need addresses for several groups, but this "first wave" consists of 95 save-the-dates. The next batch will mostly likely be another 50 or so. I know. It's crazy how much the guestlist has already grown. Our gust count at this point is up to 249 people invited - not including Phillip's extended family I don't know about and his parents' work friends. I know not all will be able to come, but it's still quite a large number.

I feel honored to have this many people to invite and it makes me feel so loved to see how many people our parents want to join us on our big day. I know I will not have time to go and see every single person on the big day, but know that I will appreciate each and every one of you!

Thankful for Things

Thank you, wonderfully thick comforter, for making sleeping in this morning so much more enjoyable. I know I give you a hard time in the summer months because you get awful warm (and let’s face it, Phillip pretty much hates you all of the time) but today you were excellent. I felt perfectly warm and was still able to remember that it is cold.

Thank you, COMM 470, for being cancelled today. Don’t worry, I did say a prayer last night for the professor who has a “family emergency” but I’m think grateful for the chance to snuggle in the cold with the comforter. You were my only class today, so now I get to relax a little and then go to work, which is always fun. Yay!

Thank you, warm pajamas, for helping comforter out with the warmth. Pretty much I feel the same way about you that I do with the comforter. And this morning, you both pulled through for me – and with a glorious assist from the pink alligator socks.

Thank you, coffee, for always brightening my day. You are pretty consistently the best part of my morning. I know you are considered a drug, and that explains my psychological and physical dependence on you, but your effects are totally worth it. I need you to start my day and get my mind going, even when I don’t want to.

Thank you, paycheck, for announcing your arrival for tomorrow. I always love getting those friendly emails the day before, as if they are saying “help is on its way!” You laugh, but it’s true. I can’t wait for you to get here so I can finish paying for my wedding dress and actually get to do things again. Mom and dad have helped you out more than enough and it’s time you give them a break.

Thank you, boss, for giving me an opportunity to make some money. I am babysitting your two well-behaved little boys on Saturday so you and your husband can go to the football game – and you’re offering a pretty generous payment amount in exchange. I won’t let you down!!

Ladies and Gentlemen, I Give You: FALL

You read that right. Fall weather has finally arrived here in College Station – hopefully to stay. I am loving the feeling I get when I walk outside in the morning to the cold weather, sweater on and warm coffee in my hand. Tonight I made a delish chili cheese corn dog casserole (don’t judge) and had some hot apple cider. Yep. I’ve fallen into fall quite abruptly in the past 24 hours. I even listened to two Christmas songs this afternoon.

Post Interview Update

Yesterday’s interview went really well. There’s not a single thing I would have changed about it so I’m feeling good. I left feeling like I am qualified for this position and that I could do it. I can really see myself doing this job.

The next step would be a second interview with a couple of extra people to help the big boss make his decision. I’m supposed to be notified in the next week or two if I have made it to that stage of the process. I’m really hoping I do. This is the perfect opportunity for me to make a difference.

Throughout the interview, there was a lot of talk about where the program is headed and how the new health educator would help it. It’s so exciting to hear all of the wonderful changes they’re ready to make and the great opportunities that position has to improve the department. It would be a dream to impact students as well as staff within the University. I feel like I would be a good fit there.

There are so many great points to this job, and I have yet to think of a negative. I’m really crossing my fingers and praying for this one. Please do the same for me. This would be best case scenario for me and I’d really love every second of it. A job where my passion shows through and one in which I could make a difference? Yes please!

Preparing for THE Job Interview Tomorrow

Tomorrow is a big day. I am interviewing at SMU for the best job I could ask for at this point in my life. It is one I didn’t think I’d qualify for, but they still asked for an interview. I’m getting nervous. I’ve done my research on the program and understand the job posting, but so many questions still remain.

Can I do this? Am I ready for this? Can I keep an open mind so I’m sure if I get the job that I want to work there? How do I keep from rambling? What can I expect? Will this be a firing squad of questions? What if I don’t know the answers to some of the questions? What if they ask questions I’m supposed to know the answers to but I have no clue? Does that mean I’m not ready to be a Health Educator? Does that mean my degree really is worthless?

I know I’m only psyching myself out, but my biggest fear is that they’ll ask me questions I’m supposed to know but don’t. Things like “Using the health belief model, how would you assess person A’s readiness to comply with a program? And what tailored program would you create for said person?” Or what if they spurt off terms I don’t know?

I’m hoping this is way less stressful than I am anticipating. It just feels like my whole degree is on the line. I really want this job and feel like I could do great things with it. This passion to educate college students about health topics is new but strong. I have a fear of failing…

Morning Breath

I’m going to take a minute to talk to all of you about one of my biggest pet peeves in the entire world – bad morning breath. I can’t stand it. It makes me nauseous. And just because you aren’t talking doesn’t mean I can’t smell it. Just breathing through the nostrils lets out the terrible smell – hello! your nose and mouth are connected you know!!

Quick Update Amidst Chaos

Alright, so I don’t have much time to update – and might not until Monday evening at some point. But I just had to update you on something INCREDIBLE!

SMU called today and want me to come interview for the job on MONDAY! I am so excited, I can’t even begin to tell you!

So now this relaxing weekend is turning into one of chaos! I just finished my grant early and then it’s on to a 10 page paper that I want to finish early too – need to add both to my hopefully impressive portfolio. I will keep you posted as I know things. Wish me luck!!!

Checking Off the Checklist

Today I have been busy getting ready to send save-the-dates. I have been emailing and messaging and texting people to get finalized addresses – this is going to be great for sending wedding invitations too, since it’ll all be done.

Hopefully these save-the-dates will be printed this weekend. I just have to find a place that will do a good job without costing an arm and a leg. Anyone in BCS with any suggestions, please contact me! Once they’re printed, it’s all about addressing, stuffing, stamping, and sending. We’re sending them in envelopes so they won’t smear or get ruined in the mail. If we’re spending this much money on them (and if Heather spent that much time creating them), you are going to keep them FOREVER on fridges and in scrapbooks. This is kind of a threat.

I also gave my dad some updates for the wedding website to make it all current and stuff. That needs to happen periodically since we change our minds and now things are starting to be set in stone. How exciting!

Hopefully a newspaper engagement announcement will also be in the not-so-distant future. Loving it!

Phillip This Weekend

Thursday night, my wonderful Phillip is coming in town. I’m ready to have a weekend to ourselves with no real big plans – other than watching the WORLD SERIES! I want a relaxing time with him to just hang out and enjoy each other’s company. We haven’t done that in a really long time. We are passed due for a date night and past due for laying around the apartment all day together. I can’t wait!

Thoughtful Mood

I’m at Muldoon’s again. This time I’m actually here to get things done. I finished writing the section of my grant proposal that’s due tomorrow and even corrected a previous section with suggestions made by my professor. Productive much? Yes.

Tomorrow night I’m going to tackle that COMM paper that’s due next Tuesday. It’s actually just a rough draft, but it’s going to be graded and has the same requirements as the final paper. Therefore, it’s basically the final paper. I need to get on that, especially since Phillip is coming in town this weekend.

So back to my thoughtfulness. I can’t really explain what I’m thinking about because it isn’t one thing. I’m thinking about a lot of little things all at once. It’s overwhelming. I feel weird and indifferent but also worried as if something scary is on the horizon. I suppose this is due to my fast approaching graduation. My dad sent me back to College Station with boxes to start packing. Since then I guess my mind has been racing.

I looked at my planner today and have so much already filled in for 2011. Crazy how the older you get the busier you get. I never thought I’d actually believe that seeing as I denied it and told my parents my life was busier and more complex than theirs every time they tried to tell me life only gets harder when I was having a freak out over the smallest things.

Mission Bridesmaid Dresses : COMPLETE

Yes, that’s right everyone! We found the perfect dresses for my beautiful maids to walk down the aisle in. I am too excited! I think they’ll look beautiful. The official shade of blue has been set and I can’t wait to run with it.

This weekend was a whole lot of fun and I’m glad I got to see everyone (except Shauna, who I will see ASAP). The bridal salon was absolutely magnificent and still has the best customer service in the entire world. They made picking out bridesmaid dresses fun and a big event. It was special and not at all a hassle. Great job, Pence and Panache!

Now I just have to chug through to graduation and applying for jobs. Thanksgiving is soon. Christmas is soon. New Years is soon. My life is taking off and I’m holding on to enjoy every second possible.

Resumes, Money, and Pizza - Oh My!

I'm currently in the midst of getting my resume more ready for other jobs to apply to. The career center is being painfully slow - hence me sending in my resume to SMU without the feedback that would have been helpful. Oh well. It was better to submit a resume that was good than wait for a great one and miss the deadline. Keep your fingers crossed!

I feel like this week has been draining already - paricularly in the wallet area. I didn't come into this week with a whole lot of money to spend, but wound up making bank account cry. And there's still so much to pay for. This is overwhelming. I hate having to shell out tons of money - and I hate when other people don't understand that. [No worries though - I get paid Friday!!!]

On a brighter note, I get to go pick up a free Papa Murpheys pizza tonight! Then spend even more money. I may eat the whole thing by myself. I. Just. Might. I've eaten pretty well lately so I suppose I deserve it.

Wedding Productivity

Tomorrow starts another week. It’ll be a relaxing one, but still one filled with class and work. I’m ready to be done with studying and tests and such. Perhaps that’s another thing pointing me in a different direction than nursing school? I mustn’t read into that too much.

Anyways. So this coming weekend is the Bridal Party Fitting! I am too excited! I can’t wait to see all of my girls in the same place and discuss wedding business. Having them pick out their dresses will make this thing even more real – as if it isn’t already. It’s getting crazy.

Today/tonight I actually got a lot of wedding stuff done. We have a nearly complete excursion list of the cruise! It’s narrowed down to 2 or 3 choices for each port. We’ll need to weight out the pros and cons to 100% decide what we want to do. But it’s an accomplishment, seeing as there’s like a bajillion excursions listed for each port. It’s been an exhausting task so 2 or 3 options is quite the thing to brag about.

The list of things for Phillip and me to register for is also complete. It’s a rough list of necessities given that we’ll inevitably go registry gun happy in every store and register for more art than we’ll have wall space for but at least we have what we absolutely need to register for in a consolidated list.

The pew arrangements and unity candle business was also worked out. I have a list of what is going on each pew, so that’s nice. All-in-all, we’ll need 6 mini bouquets, 6 words of devotion/love, and 12 candles. The words of devotion/love will be words like “love” or “trust” or whatever that are important to us. I’ll make them nice and pretty and put them on cardstock and attach them to pews using ribbon. This will be an elegant way to cut the costs associated with 12 bouquets (versus the 6 bouquets we need when using this cost-effective “filler”). It’ll look great. Trust me.

Um. What else did I do? Well, Heather is awesome and created a list of cake bakers in DFW, as well as a list of florists. Manda also contributed to the bakery list. I have a great and not overwhelming list of vendors to set up consultation appointments with. Those appointments will most likely take place in early January before Heather goes back to school.

Tabitha sent me song clips of first dance options. I’m still on the prowl for one. I have a couple of great options, but I want Phillip to decide from a list I give him, as previously explained. After all, it’s his song too.

Phillip and I have also officially decided on a ceremony time! 6:00 p.m.! It’s the time we told the church (and also told the Ballpark the reception will start at 7:00) but we told them it was tentative. But now we’re making it official. I would have loved for it to be later to indicate a more formal feel. However, given that we now have to leave Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. for Galveston and given that Phillip and I are both earlybirds, this is the best option. We just might have to add a little tid-bit about dress code to make it a little more formal. I’m thinking semi-formal (cocktail dresses and suits). What do you think?

I’m excited about what’s happening and what’s to come. I’ll keep you informed as more decisions are made and such. Things are starting to move quickly and I need to hold on for dear life!

A Break From Reality

Since my exam yesterday morning (I’m pretty sure I at least passed!), I have been doing nothing important – and enjoying every second of it. Last night I got to spend some time with Grace. This morning I haven’t left my bed for more than 2 minutes. I could get used to lazy Sundays.

I haven’t been able to do nothing since August. Every weekend, I have had something to do and somewhere to be. Today is a change of pace. Today I refuse to work on any school work. Luckily, I only have one measly assignment due Thursday at 5:00pm. I also refuse to feel the need to be somewhere at a certain time. I’m taking it easy. This feels nice. A welcomed change. I’ll feel refreshed this week instead of exhausted, like previous weeks.

Job Posting!

So last night after I finished up studying, I decided to search up a few jobs to see what was out there – you know, to gain some more options. I found one that I am actually going to apply for this week! Wow! I doubt I’ll get it because I have zero experience, but I meet the qualification requirements and even some of the preferred stuff. It’s worth a shot, right!?

Job Title: Program Specialist, Full-Time

Area: Center for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention

Responsibilities: The program specialist is under the direction of the Director of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention, plans, implements, and evaluates health education and prevention programming primarily addressing alcohol and drug abuse issues among university students.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

I come to you on a break from studying for the exam tomorrow. The more I go over the material, the more I realize that I know this stuff. I’ve been learning it all for three years now and feel like I can’t cram anymore. When the time comes to take the test, I know I’ll be able to pull information out of the depths of my long-term memory to pick the correct answer. Still nervous. Still studying. But almost ready.

I know all of you have been anxiously awaiting the announcement I eluded to in a previous entry (“Under Construction”). Well, after some meeting and thoughts, I’ve made a significant discovery:

I MAY NOT WANT TO DO NURSING SCHOOL ANYMORE

Or at least, not right now. I haven’t made my decision yet – it should be coming in early December, around graduation. But my wheels are turning and reflection is starting to take place.

What brought me to this epiphany you ask? Well several factors:

1. Coffee with Christine. A few weeks ago, I had a wonderful time seeing Christine and catching up. I was discussing my future plans with her and various ways in which I can use my degree if I do not get into nursing school. She said something to me that I had never considered. She said that I always talk about wanting to be a specific kind of nurse, but never about being a nurse in general. It’s true. I’m not yearning to give shots or bandage arms or clean bed pans. Can I do it? Absolutely. Can I work in a crisis? Saying it’s one of my strengths is an understatement. But do I want to do it? That’s a question I’m on a mission to answer.

2. UNT denied me. Yes, I am aware that with the exception of a small blurb at the bottom of an entry, I have not really talked about it much. The truth is, I’m bummed about not getting in. I was actually going to probably pick grad school over nursing school anyway – or rather, I was seriously considering it. Does being denied compel me to drop nursing school like an old hat? Not even close. But what it did do is make me realize that nursing wasn’t the only thing I wanted to do in my life and that other options do exist that I would enjoy equally – if not more.

3. TCU’s nursing school spoke at a Future Aggie Nurses meeting. An unlikely source of life-changing messages, I know. But it did get me thinking. The representative said that “nursing school is too hard to do just to do it.” Hm. I never thought of it that way. I’ve always figured it’s school and I can do it. However, if I’m not 100% into learning the material, I’ll die faster than a salt-covered slug. Yeah. I said it. I can’t decide six months into the program that nursing isn’t for me. That’s not fair to me nor is it fair to another candidate that wants my admission spot. I fear that may happen if I start in January.

4. My bosses gave me some clarity. They gave me some much needed advice and confidence about employers in the field. One of my big concerns is entering the health field without a master’s degree. But while it is a bonus to have more education, they told me it is not the first thing employers look at – or at least not the first thing my bosses have looked at.

5. The career center gave me more clarity. I made an appointment with a career advisor earlier in the week to see if I could get an unbiased opinion. Success! I spent an hour and a half with her, though the appointment was only supposed to be 30 minutes. She helped me perfect my resume – and was really impressed with my certification section. We also talked about how to look for jobs, when to look for jobs, and she showed me tons of resources the center has that I can utilize before I graduate. I was also coached on how to inquire about employers creating jobs for me. It kind of excited me.

6. Let’s face it, who wouldn’t want to make some extra money? With a wedding in the works and a husband still in school, the next year will be financially difficult. Having one of us in a full-time job would alleviate a lot of stress. I don’t view this reason as a top reason by any means, but still something to consider.

7. An uncertain future makes me want to hold off on schooling. With the possibility of Phillip attending graduate school in New Mexico, maybe it’s a good thing I wait a bit to start a second schooling career. If I started nursing school now, I’d either have to put it on hold for New Mexico or try my hardest to get as much as possible to transfer – risking loss of hours. I know there is no certainty to Phillip going to grad school there, but it is a significant option.

So I know you guys are thinking that my mind is already made up – and maybe it is. I don’t know. I’m not making a set-in-stone decision until after I find out if TCC accepts me into their nursing program or not. I want to do some more contemplating. I feel like I’m at a fork in the road and each path is one-way. I know I can always do the other option if I don’t like the first, but if that first option is nursing school, I’ll have a lot of time and work before I go back into the health field. I feel like possibly going into the workforce will give me some extra perspective. Maybe…?

Being a health major has opened my eyes to so many endless possibilities and lots of doors are open for me to walk through. I’m just not sure if I’m ready to close all of them just yet.

Neglect

It seems that I have been a little lazy when it comes to updating this blog. It feels like the last couple of weeks have flown by and I haven’t had the time to write as much as I’d like to – and when I finally do get to sit down, there seems too much to write. So, sorry for the gaps that exist. I promise, I’ll try harder in the future.

Saturday is the CHES exam. I’m getting rather nervous. It’s a big exam that will basically show if I’m cut out to be a Health Educator or not. I’m also contemplating a lot of things right now in regards to my future career. I need to see what’s out there and make the most informed decision possible. I’ve talked to my bosses and will talk to a career advisor tomorrow to give me more clarity. This weekend I’m going to spend a lot of time by myself at a park somewhere to further think about where I see myself come January. Things are up in the air and I haven’t been this uncertain in a long time. But I have faith. I’ll figure it out.

Next Saturday is the bridal party fitting. I’m so excited to spend time with my girls and see them in gorgeous dresses! Pray that it goes well and everyone can agree on a dress. It’ll make this wedding stuff that much more real.

Phillip’s coming the next weekend. I’m ready to have him all to myself. We haven’t been able to just enjoy each other’s company with no obligations since the end of August. I’m ready to spend time with him. I miss him!

Alright, I know this entry has been all over the place, so I’ll end with another random thing – countdown. I promised it so here it is!

Bridal Party Fitting : 9 days
Phillip Weekend / Halloween Weekend : 14 days

8 Months to Go!!

That’s right, bloggers, there are only 8 more months left until the best night of my entire life. I truly cannot wait to celebrate Phillip and me with all of our wonderful family and friends. I love him and can’t wait to take that next step!

This week has had a rocky start, but I know it’ll get better. I’m exhausted and cranky. I need my sleep and I need to figure out what in the world I’m doing with my life. But the thing that gets me going is knowing that I am going home for good in a little over two months, and that I’m going into a world that I’ve waited my whole life for. That along is exciting enough to motivate me.

I made a rough wedding guest list tonight. Without our parents’ additions, the invite list comes to 208 people. Not bad. Right on par with what we were thinking. I’m sure the list will probably go up, but I also know that not everyone will be able to come.

Things are rolling along and I know these next months are going to fly by. I need to keep enjoying every second of it! I love you Phillip, and miss you like crazy!

Great Mood

Right now I am in a fantastic mood. I had a great girls weekend in Arlington, and even got to see Phillip for a bit. It was fun! I also have nothing really pressing to do this week and will actually be in College Station this coming weekend. I’m ready to relax.

Tomorrow, I will hopefully have help with wedding stuff. I need to get a rough draft of a guest list going and send it to the moms to revise. I also need to do a ton of Google searching. Yay for having great friends that are wanting to help!

I will be going to sleep soon – since I am bordering on delirium and exhaustion. It was a fun but exhausting weekend and I’m ready for a relaxing week and weekend. I do have to take a pretty big national standardized test Saturday. But other than that, I am free!! So excited for upcoming events! I’m sure a countdown entry will come soon, especially since I haven’t done one in a while.

Overwhelming (Wedding Planning Update)

Since my tests are winding down (only one more to go tonight and it shouldn't be too tough), I've decided it's time to get my butt in gear and see where I'm at with all of this wedding planning business. I've gotten into this routine of planning for a week straight and then taking three weeks off. While this has worked for the past year, I'm afraid I need a new strategy so things don't get too crazy. I need to start doing at least a little each week - with no more extended breaks. Afterall, it's just over 8 months until the big day.

Tonight after my tests, I need to organize and update my binder. I also need to compile a list of local florists, invitation makers, and cake bakers to visit at a later date - I'll probably need to schedule a separate weekend at home for those. Other items on the list for this week: finish listing potential cruise excursions, finalize cruise registry, organize an order of engagement prints from the photographer, and make one final list of items to register for since we have now decided on our stores. I should also get around to making a budget timeline of due dates and such... but that's the boring part.

I was originally thinking about registering over Christmas break, but I don't know if we'll have time. The next option would be Thanksgiving, but with Christmas shopping crowds, I'm afraid it will be impossible. Therefore, it will either be a few weeks before Thanksgiving or the week after Christmas. I'm leaning toward the latter of the two options, but wonder if that's cutting it a little too close and eliminating the possibility of Christmas gift ideas. Thoughts??

In other wedding news, we have officially given our photographer our choice of photography package. And guess what!? We're going to be able to get TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS! It'll be the best way to capture every moment and every angle of the evening. We also heard the DJ at Samantha's wedding last weekend - and really enjoyed him. On the plus side, he was really acting like a host and even refilled people's drinks and got the bride and groom food at their seats! I also felt like he did a good job of mixing, was very punctual, announcing what was next and coordinating the entire night. On the minus side, however, I felt like he mumbled a bit (maybe it was the room size?) and he didn' have as much of a feel for the music and guests match-up (perhaps it was because nobody danced at all - surely not a problem for our rowdy guests :-P). I'm thinking we're definitely going with that particular company for a DJ, but just not quite sure about whether to request this DJ or not.

Oh my goodness, this is just so much to think about and do! I guess once you reach this point, the snow ball just takes off. This really is a full time job! And I need to get a move on! For those of you lucky enough to be one of my bridesmaids, perhaps there will be delegations in your future? ;)

Let me know if you're interested in helping me out! I'm ready for assistance now!
